Tipping in America is simply the done thing. The custom of tipping for most services should be adopted when in America, despite what you are used to at home. The following is a top 5 guide to tipping for anyone visiting the beautiful country on American holidays
1. Have some dollars ready. $10 worth of $1 dollar notes should be carried in your wallet at any one time so make sure you ask for a little extra at the currency exchange. This means you won’t have to ask for change and you can tip whatever value you want easily. Don’t be embarrassed if you have to ask for change though as it is quite common
2. Bars. In general you should be looking to tip about a dollar a drink when bought at the bar. Of course if you are buying a big round then just tip $3-$4 dollars for the lot. If the beverages are served to you all night at your table then you should really leave a 10% tip on your bill at the end
3. Restaurants. the type of restaurant where you are eating kind of determines this one. Cheaper take-away style places only really should be tipped maybe 15% whilst more up market eateries should be tipped at a rate of around 20-25% of the bill. You should increase the tip amount for staff who put in the extra effort you or are particularly helpful.
4. Bags. A porter who takes your bags up to your room will be expecting a tip of $1 per bag. Give more if you think it is warranted but it is advised not to go lower or offer change to the porter. Bag carriers at airports should be tipped between $2 to $4 per bag
5. Poor service. If you are not happy with the standard of service then don’t feel you have to tip. But be sure to explain your choice. Constructive feedback is generally appreciate in the USA and the people you give it to are rarely offended. Florida holidays staff are particularly humble.
