There are seven islands that make up the Canary Islands – Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, Lanzarote, La Palma and El Hierro.
The islands were produced by volcanic eruptions many many years ago and are now popular tourist destinations for both the young and old.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the four most popular islands with vibrant resorts, all year round sunshine and crystal clear waters. Both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are ideal for lovers of water sports and golf and Tenerife (Playa de Las Americas) and Gran Canaria (Playa del Ingles) are the most popular for partygoers.
La Palma and El Hierro are situated to the west and Lanzarote and Fuerteventura to the east. Gran Canaria and Tenerife both have northern regions that are greener and wetter than the southern regions and has some picturesque, inland mountain villages. Fuerteventura is known as the windy isle, although boasts some of the longest, most glorious beaches in the Canaries. It is also home to the yearly championships.
Known as ‘La Isla Bonita’, La Palma is popular for its panoramic scenery and beautiful views. Along with La Gomera and El Hierro these three of the islands are situated farthest west of the islands and are the least commercialised of the islands.
The Canary Islands are a popular all year round holiday destination for all kinds of individuals. Tourists can explore the mountains, participate in a wide range of outdoor activities or simply relax on one of the many glorious beaches.
Easily accessible from the United Kingdom with cheap flights from all major airports, the Canaries enjoy all year round sunshine with temperatures topping the high thirties in the summer months and the low 20’s in the winter months. With rainfall down to approximately fourteen days a year you are more or less guaranteed a sun filled holiday whatever time of the year.
