Costa Rica is well known for its unpolluted white sandy beaches, rainforest (as you might have seen it in the reality program “I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here!”. However one of the most awesome attractions the country has to offer is non other than the majestic volcanoes.

Located in the northern part of Costa Rica, the volcanoes are over 65 million years old and they are part of the epic center that ranges all the way from New Zealand. Most of the volcanoes in Costa Rica are inactive and there are only 5 of them that are in the active state. The areas around the volcanoes have certainly benefited it as the land is rich and fertile due to the volcanic eruptions. This has resulted in the growth of variety of flora and faunas which in turn promotes the increase of wildlife in the area. Visiting the volcanoes should be a priority on your list of places to visit as it will definitely spice up your Costa Rica honeymoon.

The volcanic ranges in Costa Rica consist of 3, they are Talamanca, Guanacaste and the central range. The central range is made up Barva, Irazu, Turraialba and Poas volcano. Guanacaste is where the popular Arenal Volcano is located as well as Orosi, Tenatio and Ricon volcano. El Viejo is the only volcano found in Talamanca. The 5 active volcanoes are Irazu, Ricon Poas, Orosi and last but not least Arenal. You haven’t been to Costa Rica if you didn’t visit the domineering Arenal Volcano is how most tourist and locals put it. The volcano is both majestic and fearsome especially at night where hot larvae, gas and hot stones can be seen shooting up hundreds of feet in the air on quite frequently.

Arenal volcano is not the only attraction of the area. There is also a national park of the same name that is famous for its artificial lake which is considered to be the largest in the country. The lake is populated with many types of fresh water fish such as rainbow bass and others. This also means that the lake is frequently visited by fishermen or sports anglers alike who simply love the abundance of fish in the lake and the clean air of the area. As I mentioned earlier that watching the Arenal volcano night is definitely better so unless you want to rush back to the city at night, I suggest that you stay in one of hotels and resorts in the area. There are several to choose from such as Tabacon Grand Spa Resort, Arenal Kioro hotel and Nayara hotel.

After the Arenal, you may want to visit Poas Volcano which has one of the largest craters in the world. Poas is easily accessible from San Jose as it is only about an hour away from the capital city of Costa Rica. The largest crater measures up to 1.5 kilometers in diameter. One of the craters is still considered to be active and you can see hot bubbles and gas being emitted which also make the water in the crater acidic and geyser like. The rest of the craters are already inactive so there is no emission of gas but what you can find is ice cold and clear water in the crater. The nearby Poas National Park is also a great place to visit as it is filled with rare species of birds and mammals as well as the unique forestation of the area which ranges from dense to stunted forest
