Petronas Towers, also known as Petronas Twin Towers, are twin buildings situated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the site of city’s race track. Of the two building, the one named Tower 1 was built by Hazama Corporation, while the other, known as Tower 2, was constructed by Samsung Engineering & Construction. The construction work on Petronas Towers was completed in 1998 and they were opened in August 1999. At the time of their completion, the twin buildings were the tallest buildings in the world and continued to be so till 2004.
Designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates (USA) together with KLCC architects, the tapering twin towers are 1483 feet (452m) tall and connected by a sky bridge. They are considered the tallest twin buildings in the world. Based on simple Islamic geometric forms, they symbolize the concept of “unity within unity, harmony, stability and rationality.” The twin towers of Kuala Lumpur are a national and cultural icon.
The 88 storied high-strength concrete structures have an avant-garde exterior complete with traditional Malaysian arts and handicrafts. A ring of sixteen cylindrical columns support the massive structures of the towers and the columns are linked by arched ring beams to strengthen the floors. A sky bridge connects the two buildings at the 41st floor, making it possible to move from one tower to the other while being 170 metres above ground. The tower accommodates retail and entertainment complexes, over 300 shops, an art gallery, 880-seat concert hall, a specialized library, a central atrium, restaurants, an interactive science discovery centre, and a four-storey underground car park with parking space for over 5,400 cars.
