The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and St. Peter’s Basilica are just some of the world-renowned attractions that can be found in the beautiful city of Rome in Italy. In fact the list goes on; the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Galleria Borghese, the Capitoline and Vatican museums, Pantheon, Vittorio Emanuele II Monument and so forth. And as the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day”, and it certainly takes longer than a day to discover just a small portion of what the Italian capital has to offer.

Rome is not just famous for its tourist sights, but also cuisine and café culture, both of which are an important part of local Roman life. Almost every street will have its own bar, not pub-like bars as native English speakers may envisage them, but more like a café, where the small TV in the corner will be blaring out the latest football scores, while the regular customers will be discussing, with numerous types of hand gestures, the state of the nation or any other hot topics that relate to Italian current affairs.

Anyone who has met an Italian will know that they love food. In fact it is a topic that is often spoken about, much in the same way that the British talk about the weather. Romans are no different to their fellow countrymen and the city has a wide selection of traditional Roman cuisine. Favourite local dishes include Gnocchi alla Romana (baked semolina gnocchi with a light butter and Parmesan cheese topping) and Calamari della Romana (fried squid rings in a batter sauce). There are restaurants on most of the main streets in Rome, but locals general eat in the suburbs where they live. Two central areas which are definitely worth visiting for either lunch or dinner are Trastevere and San Lorenzo, where you can find cheap and good quality food.

We have briefly mentioned some of the reasons why Rome is a must-see for any discerning traveller have been briefly mentioned above and hopefully your appetite has been whetted for a visit. The next step is to choose a suitable hotel in Rome in an area where you can easily reach the famous landmarks, enjoy the food and discover the city on foot or by public transport. Termini, the name given of the main train station and the area around it, fits all these requirements. San Lorenzo is just north of the station, several sights, such as the Coliseum can easily be reached on foot, the main bus depot is nearby, and also the station is home to the only metro stop where there is an interchange for both lines, A and B.

It is relatively easy to find a Rome hotel near Termini, due to the large selection available. The area has of course attracted so many hotels and bed and breakfasts due to the fact that it has excellent connections to the whole city. WRH Termini is one such establishment that lies just around the corner from Termini. Classed as an Italian “affitacamere”, which is a small establishment that offers guesthouse-like accommodation, guests are warmly welcomed on arrival and can expect a clean and modern environment. The rooms have been fully equipped with today’s creature comforts, including air conditioning and a personal computer with free internet access, ensuring that guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Another hotel worth considering is the 4 star Hotel Alpi which lies about 200 metres north west from the station. The hotel has been managed by the same family since the early Sixties and lies in a magnificent Art Nouveau style building. There are a total of 48 rooms available, each uniquely styled and decorated, and again, well equipped with a good selection of creature comforts.
