This is what happens when the recession comes in, companies need to find a different way to pull in potential customers and then convert. Travel agents have been using some exotic smells in their offices to help remind customers of what they are missing out on. The smells are supposed to remind customers of previous holidays, trying to jog their memories.
Encouraging people to book holidays can be a quite a task unless they have already made up their minds. We may not be able to detect them immediately and we may not notice them at all, but it might be enough to convince you to take that holiday. Some of these aromas that are being used include; orange groves for a Mediterranean feel freshly mown grass for golfers and a Pina Colada’s for romantic breaks. Barbados holidays have benefited from all kinds of sales techniques; they seem to be one of the most popular holidays this year.
Thompson has claimed that Coconut is the best choice and used frequently throughout their shops. The smell reminds people of the Caribbean mainly because of the sun lotion that it reminds them of. First Choice has been using a smell similar to that of an ice cream to appeal more to families. Caribbean holidays sales recently have been doing very well.
However it has not been the Travel Agent who has first come up with this idea to play with our noses to increase sales. Travelodge were the first to come up with this innovative idea. Just so that they could make sure their customers would remember them, they used some aroma’s like apple pie.
So how does this actually help them to boost sales? Obviously some stimuli will cause you to remember somethings, so why should smell be any different. We might be able to notice the aroma when we walk in, but we wont be able to immediately tie it with a place or location. All the aroma will do is make us feel a certain way, sometimes we may remember where it is from but more than likely it will cause an emotional reaction. So try St Lucia holidays for that relaxing experience, and a relaxing new aroma!
