The UK is in chaos after several days of intense winter weather and snowfall.
Roads are littered with abandoned vehicles in many of the worst hit parts of the country. Many were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to increase a little today. A number of people are reported to have been trapped in their cars overnight in sub zero temperatures.
Public transport systems have also been disrupted. High speed Eurostar trains that run between London and Paris have been breaking down due to snow getting into the power systems. Around 2000 Eurostar passengers were trapped for up to 16 hours in the Channel tunnel. Some passengers reported suffering from claustrophobia, some from panic attacks and many have complained about the lack of information.
Eurostar have now begun to resume operation of their high speed trains after three days with no service. There are now huge queues of stranded passengers to deal with in both France and the UK.
As freezing temperatures persist the National Health Service has told people they should stay at home unless their journey is absolutely essential. Hospitals have reported unprecedented numbers of people injured as a result of falling on icy pavements.
With Christmas only days away many people need to visit their local towns in order to complete their pre-christmas shopping. This is forcing many to venture onto dangerous pavements that are treacherous.
Many are already discussing how well and how badly the UK has coped in this latest wave of bad winter weather. Councils have been quick to treat main roads with salt and grit but many side roads and most pavements have remained untreated and dangerous.
Earlier in 2009 the UK experienced some intense winter weather that plunged the country into arctic conditions, wreaking havoc upon transportation, schools and industry. This latest period of bad weather has prompted many people to ask why the UK suffers so much when winter comes along.
